Gay Premarital Counseling!
Now that the Supreme Court of California has legalized gay weddings, I know many gay couples who want to take advantage of this historic development, especially during the window of opportunity before the election in November!
Yet this sense of urgency may or may not coincide with your own readiness to take this next step. One partner may be totally gung ho, while the other partner may believe there are some issues that still need to be addressed.
It's important to see the need to explore this option further doesn't necessarily mean you're not committed to each other, or that you have serious doubts. Although this new marriage option can also stimulate a determination to really ask for what you want, and negotiate mutually acceptable solutions, before you make such a serious commitment!
If you rush into marriage leaving a number of issues unresolved, these can easily come back to haunt you--either while planning the wedding itself, dealing with family, or even later, after the honeymoon, and all the dust has settled!
Even if you've already been together for years, and marriage seems like simply a recognition of what's already true about your relationship, there may still be a number of issues to sort through.
Gay premarital counseling can help you build a rock-solid foundation for your marriage! We'll clarify expectations in all aspects of your relationship: sexual, spiritual, financial, and how you want to relate to friends and family.
Some couples may choose to take advantage of a legal civil marriage, and then have a marriage ceremony at a later time that fits their own schedule better. This can give them plenty of time to plan their wedding, and invite friends and family, without feeling rushed, or that they've simply "thrown something together" at the last minute.
Nonetheless, as witnessed during the month-long weddings that took place in San Francisco four years ago, even a civil ceremony can take on a great deal of meaning. Many couples who figured their city hall marriage wasn't going to be their "real" wedding, nonetheless had a very moving experience--it's not simply like picking up the dry-cleaning, or renewing your driver's license!
I'm not a wedding planner, myself, but I can help you negotiate your preferences for the details of your wedding, and find solutions that will meet both your needs!
I can also help you tread as lightly (or as boldly!) as you want through the (occasional) minefields of announcing your upcoming ceremony to your friends, co-workers, and families!

P.S. As many of you know, the anti-gay marriage initiative garnered enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot. Equality California is spearheading the opposition to this anti-gay initiative. If you'd like to make a donation to defeat this amendment, click on this link!
